Nasarawa athletes leave for Abuja today
Nasarawa State athletes and officials will arrive Abuja today for the 2018 National Sports Festival after they had their athletes reduced from 400 to 200, our correspondent has learnt.
It was learnt that the state government released N16m for the contingent but our correspondent scooped that the officials are insisting that only N300,000 was left from the money.
They thus reduced the number of athletes despite registering all 400 athletes for the event.
“Each athlete is registered with N15,000. Even if you drop 200 athletes from the trip, you will still have to pay their registration fee since their names were given at the Delegates Registration Meeting,” an athletics coach who spoke on condition of anonymity said.
Also, a section of the athletes and coaches expressed worry over their preparations for the Games. They lamented the substandard equipment, which they trained with at the Lafia Township Stadium ahead of the biennial Games, and the poor welfare package from the government.
Our correspondent, who monitored their training, learnt that most of the athletes were unhappy due to the inability of the state government to provide modern equipment for their training.
