Nasarawa State Government to promote grassroots sports especially football.

Nasarawa State Government said it will continue to promote grassroots sports, since sports is one of the unifying factors.

The state Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Bamaiyi Anangba, stated this during the opening ceremony of the Maiden Edition of Kwanta Yakubu five-a-side Football Tournament held at the Akwanga Central Primary School.

According to Anangba, sports, especially football, has brought people together than any other thing in the world, hence the need to promote it.

According to him, ” When i assumed office as Commissioner earlier this year, my primary area of transformation was in grassroots sports development through the upgrading of obsolete facilities, revamping of Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Competition, as well as re-staging of the Governor’s Cup to boost sporting activities in the State, which will create jobs and further take youths out of restiveness”

The commissioner, challenged participating players and teams at the competition to take advantage of it saying “The Sports Ministry, has sent it squad out to hunt for talents for the formation of a stronger feeder team for Nasarawa United and also recommend them to other teams in Nigeria”.

Earlier, sponsor of the competition and IMC Chairman of Akwanga Local Government Area of the state , Kwanta Yakubu, assured the Commissioner that the council is ready to partner the state government to promote sporting activities in the state.

The council boss said the aim of organizing the competition was borne out of his love for football and desire to affect lives, especially the vulnerable in the society, by using the proceeds from the tournament to pay hospital bills for the sick and cater for the orphans.

He acknowledged a Nigerian U.S-based Lucas Samuel, a football agent and Manager, for accepting to sponsor five exceptional talents discovered from the Tournament to the United States of America, for their football career as his contribution to the country.

The competition which will end on Friday this week saw Nunku Electoral Ward beat Agyaga Electoral Ward 3-1 in the opening match, yesterday.

Trophies and Cash prizes abound for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams, while other participating teams will be rewarded with consolation prizes.
